Kalahandi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from Chennai Police Commissioner regarding the death of a minor girl labourer from Odisha after falling off from the 9th floor of a building in Tamil Nadu.

The apex rights body has also directed the Tamil Nadu Labour Commission to submit a report in this regard.

The direction of the NHRC came in response to a petition filed by Odisha’s Bhawanipatna-based rights activist Dilip Kumar Das.

According to reports, the deceased, Ratna Gauda (16), a resident of Pahadapadar village under Lanjigarh block of Kalahandi district had gone to Tamil Nadu and was working as a daily labourer at a private construction firm.

However, she died after falling off an under-construction building, where she was working on December 28.

While her family went to bring the dead body, the firm authorities had given them Rs 16,000 as compensation and handed over the body.

Earlier, the Kalahandi district labour officer was also informed in this regard, but no action was taken in this regard. Following which Das had filed a complaint with the Commission on January 2, this year seeking justice for the deceased.

The NHRC has registered a case (244/22/13/2019) and directed the Tamil Nadu Labour Commission and Chennai Police Commissioner to submit reports in this regard.
