A 240 acre garden of beauty, it has a glass house modelled on London crystal palace. Another striking feature of this garden is that it acquired India’s first lawn-clock. And the sub-continent’s largest collection of rare plants. It also has trees that are of century old and a one thousand species of flora. History In 1760, the ruler of Mysore, Hyder Ali, commissioned the garden. But its completion was done by his son Tipu Sultan, who added Horticultural wealth to it by importing plants and trees from abroad. Hyder Ali initially designed this garden in the Mughal style. Rare species of plants from Persia, Afganisthan and France and a well-knit watering system for irrigation, in addition to lawns , flower beds, lotus pools and fountains, made this garden exquisitely attractive. After Tipu Sultan, the British and the Indian horticulture giants developed it by extending the area and adding the number of plant series. The Present Status Now it is under the directorate of horticulture , govt. of Karnataka. This directorate is in the middle of this botanical environment. In 1856, it attained the status of the government botanical garden and it led to the scientific study of plants and researched on an international level. Hindustan Machine tools (HMT) gifted these picturesque garden a huge floral clock—one of the most accurate clocks in the world.
