It is a war memorial constructed to pay tribute to the 90,000 Indian soldiers who were killed in first world war and also the third Anglo-Afghan war. History This 42 meter high gateway built in red stone and granite was the dream child of Sir Edwin Lutyen, the architect of Delhi. Completed in 1921 , it serves as a famous picnic spot for world wide tourists. Location It is a tourist attraction at the heart of the capital. It lies at the east end of Janpath leading to Rashtrapathi Bhavan. Architectural Marvel An archway, it has to counterpart in kench. The names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in north western frontier in the Afghan war 1919 is encarved on it. This arch stands on a low base of red Bharathpur stone and raises to a huge moulding. This ornamental moulding is carved with the imperial suns, while both sides of the arch have India, surrounded by the dates MCMXIV (1914 left) and MCMXIX (1919 right). Later Addition Amar Jawan Jyoti , is another memorial added much later , after India achieved its independence. This immortal flame burns day and night speaking volumes of the sacrifice of the soldiers in the Indo-Pakistan war of December 1971. Tourist spot for Summer and Winter Easily accessible to the world wide tourists, it offers a range of entertainments. The monkey performance, camel ride, playing with soap bubbles blown over the lawns and many more. After reaching the city every one can reach here by catching local buses and also can hire taxis or auto- rickshaws from anywhere throughout the city.
