Bhubaneswar: Thousands of farmers of Kalahandi district on Thursday took to the streets in protest against unavailability of crop insurance money and input subsidy against crops lost in drought in 2015.

According to information, people belonging to 10 gram panchayats gathered at Borda on the State Highway 16 and blocked the road. Resultantly, traffic movement on the Kharial-Bhawanipatna road has been severely affected.

People alleged that they have not received crop insurance money for the crop loss occurred due to drought in 2015 even though they had paid premium for the same. They too alleged that they have not received input subsidy announced by the State Government a year ago.

“Over a year has been passed since drought hit our area. We lost thousands of rupees we had invested on cultivation.

But due to inaction of the State Government, we have not received crop insurance money. Besides, we have not also got input subsidy,” locals alleged and demanded that the Government should ensure early payment of the insurance money and input subsidy.

Besides, they demanded that the period for crop insurance be extended further so that they all can be covered under the Central scheme.

A large posse of police force has been deployed at the agitation site to avoid any untoward incident there.
