Bhawanipatna: A debt-ridden farmer of Madiguda village under Bhawanipatna block in Kalahandi district died today after allegedly consuming pesticide yesterday over crop loss and loan burden. The deceased has been identified as Bahadur Rana (42).
According to reports, Rana had taken a loan of Rs 4 lakh for cotton farming on a four-acre land from bank and other private money lenders. However, he suffered crop loss due to insufficient rains and subsequently failed to repay the loan amount.
On Saturday evening, Rana took the extreme step and consumed pesticide in his farmland. He was rushed to Titlagarh hospital in a critical condition but he died while undergoing treatment.
On being informed, police reached the deceased’s village and launched an investigation into the incident.
According to sources, the deceased body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem today afternoon and his last rites was performed at the village cremation ground.
