BHUBANESWAR: The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is observing Bikash Utsav here today in view of the State Government ‘s recent announcement to establish a medical college in the district.
While Minister Puspendra Singh Deo is leading the Utsav, Finance Minister Pradeep Kumar Amat is likely to attend the programme. Kalahandi district BJD is organising the programme to convey gratitude to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for announcing a medical college.
Establishment of a Medical College and Hospital was a long standing demand of the Kalahandi people. Though there was a private medical college named Sardar Rajas Medical College at Bhawanipatna, the district headquarter town of Kalahandi, it has been closed after many irregularities, including admission and infrastructure.
As per an agreement signed recently, the Vedanta Group, which is running a aluminium refinery in Lanjigarh in the district, will construct infrastructure for the proposed medical and the State Government will run it.
However, political analysts are of view that the BJD Vikash Utsav is only meant to divert attention of Kalahandi people from the shameful incidence of Dana Majhi carrying his wife’s body for 12 km which has already been protested by both opposition parties, the Congress and the BJP, in different forms.
