Bhawanipatna: At least two persons including a two-year-old child were killed and over 30 passengers sustained injury after a bus carrying them skidded off the Lalpolia Bridge on NH-26 and plunged into a water body near here on Friday.
The mishap took place early in the morning, while the bus namely, ‘Abhilash’ run by Manikeswari Travels was on its way to Bhawanipatna from Bhubaneswar with over 40 passengers on board. While driving up the Lalpolia bridge and trying to overtake another bus moving ahead, the driver of the bus lost control over the wheels causing the vehicle to skid off the Highway and fell from a height of around 30 feet.
The injured trapped in the bus were rescued by the locals and fire personnel, who immediately reached the spot.
“At least two persons have been killed in the mishap including the conductor of the bus and a child. Similarly, over 30 passengers, who sustained injuries were admitted to Bhawanipatna DHH and six of them were later shifted to SCB Medical in Cuttack, MKCG Medical in Berhampur and VIMSAR in Burla due to deteriorating conditions”, informed Bhawanipatna SDPO Biranchi Narayan Dehuri.
Police have seized the mangled bus and started investigation into the incident.
