BHAWANIPATNA: Low pressure induced heavy rains in Odisha have caused a breach to the right canal of the Indravati Project near Ranibahal, leaving several villages inundated in Kalahandi district.
The situation prompted collector Amman Kumar Manik to direct the Indravati Project authorities to stop power generation and release water into the Hati river through the Mangalpur barrage.
The breach of 25-30 feet has caused havoc in many villages as water gushed into cropland and villages downstream Sunday night. Reports said water submerged Khuriguma, Khairmal villages and paddy fields in the area. Standing crop over 300 acres has been damaged by water and silt.
The rains also caused sudden floods in the Hati river which had already been swelling due to showers in the catchment area. To add to people’s woes, water gushing out of the breach raised levels in the Hati further and its floods riverside villages Matikhal, Biripur and Temra.
The collector along with block development officers of Jaipatna and Kalampur have rushed over to take stock of the situation.
